MAGNEURON consortium

To achieve our ambitious goal, we have gathered an interdisciplinary consortium interfacing scientists having cutting-edge know-how in bMNP engineering, surface functionalization and cellular nanobiophysics with renowned experts in neuronal cell differentiation, stem cell reprogramming and regenerative (nano-)medicine. By exploiting this complementary expertise, a novel, versatile technology for magnetic control of intracellular signaling is envisaged, which will be a breakthrough for remote actuation of cellular functions and its successful implementation in CTs for neurodegenerative diseases and injuries within the following decade.

The consortium is made of six partners (with highly complementary expertise in Physical-Chemistry, Bio-chemistry, Biophysics, Nanosciences, Neurosciences, Regenerative medicine, and Project management) from three different countries (France, Germany, UK).


Institut Curie

Institut Curie is a French non-profit organization and foundation of public interest created in 1921, which combines one of the largest European oncology research center and two state-of-the-art hospitals, with 3,000 researchers, physicians, clinicians, technicians and administrative staff. The Research Centre (27000 square meters) gathers about 850 staff scientists, including 200 graduate students and visitors, 200 postdoctoral fellows (from 45 nationalities) and 100 medical students. It consists of 14 departments or units, composed of physicists, chemists, biologists and clinicians, investigating fundamental and applied biomedical questions.

Department of Physical Chemistry includes 12 teams, composed of physicists, biologists and chemists. Its research activity aims to elucidate the role of physical and chemical processes in the architecture and functional dynamics of living matter. The department leader is Dr. Mathieu Coppey.

Phenix laboratory

Phenix laboratory is a joint research unit which belongs to Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), a government-funded research organization under the administrative authority of French Ministry in charge of research, and University Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), the leading French scientific and medical university, with its 120 research laboratories and its 3500 doctoral students. The research activity of Phenix laboratory, which includes 3 teams, deals with the study of physico-chemical properties of electrolytes, nanomaterials and interfaces.

The Inorganic Colloids team (1 technician, 1 engineer, 10 researchers, 5 PhD students, 2 post-doc) is working since more than 30 years in the field of inorganic colloids. Chemists and physicians from this team are specialized in the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles, especially magnetic ones. An important expertise has been accumulated over the years dealing with the synthesis of very high concentrated stable dispersions of those magnetic nanoparticles in aqueous or organic media (ferrofluid). Hybrid systems like magnetic liposomes, polymersomes or core shell nanoparticles have been also designed for biomedical applications. The Inorganic Colloids team is led by Dr. Christine Ménager.

Keele University

The Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM) is a flagship research institute for the university comprising a multi-disciplinary partnership between Keele University and four hospital sites, including the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. The institute has an international reputation for bio-engineering with a major focus on developing technologies for regenerative medicine and advanced therapeutics. ISTM comprises over eighty academic and clinical members with 90% of staff rated of international quality in the most recent (2008) UK Research Assess-ment Exercise. The institute has strong links with industry including founding the spin-out companies Nanotherics, MICA Biosystems and Nuovoprobe.

Birmingham University

The University of Birmingham (UoB) has recently invested £3.5 million in building a new Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI), which is part of a major initiative to accelerate medical device innovation in answer to the government’s industrial strategy. The HTI brings together engineers and scientists with clinicians in 1200m2 of new laboratory space, including cell biology, imaging and wet chemistry facilities that shall be accessed by this partnership. This facility will run within ISO standards and GMP manufacture with support in trial design, entrepreneurship and regulation provided by a central team within the Institute of Translation Medicine (ITM) driving new concepts to clinic.

The University of Osnabruck

The University of Osnabrück was founded in the early 1970s and currently has more than 12,000 students studying in 10 faculties supported by approximately 1,600 staff members. The university supports 90 partnership agreements with universities worldwide, and 140 LLP agreements with partner universities in the European Union.

The Biophysics Division at the Department of Biology of the University of Osnabrück promotes research and teaching in molecular and cellular biophysics. Our mission is to bridge the gap between the biological and the physicochemical perspective on cellular processes. To this end we have developed a broad spectrum of biophysical tools for quantifying molecular functions in complex environment, often in the context of lipid membranes. We apply these tools for unraveling the mechanistic determinants of signal transduction across the plasma membrane and we share them in numerous collaborations at the Department of Biology and beyond. Within several Bachelor and Master Courses, we introduce the inherently interdisciplinary concepts of biophysics, which we believe are pivotal for fundamental progress in the understanding of life. The Ruhr-University Bochum

The Ruhr-University is ranking within the top 10 largest universities in Germany. 6 Research Departments focus on different research priorities, one of it is neuroscience. Within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) funds The Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores Solvation: EXC 1069).

The main research focus of The Heumann laboratory lies on the investigation of the signalling small GTPase Ras in a neuronal context serving as an “intracellular neurotrophin”. A transgenic mouse model was generated in which permanent activated H-Ras is expressed specifically in neurons showing protection against lesion-induced degenera-tion in the brain. More recently, the generation of dopaminergic neurons derived from neurospheres containing stem cells has been achieved. Furthermore, there is expertise in applying (calcium phosphate) nanoparticles in cellular systems. The research group comprises 2 technicians, 5 PhD students, 1 post-doc, 1 principal investigator.
